Broadcasters play a crucial role in shaping how radio appears and behaves in vehicles. The quality, timing and clarity of the content you send directly affects what drivers see, how easily they can understand it, and how safely they can interact with it. These principles outline the core expectations for broadcast content, helping ensure radio feels consistent, predictable and distraction-free across all vehicles.
Design Principles
Section titled “Design Principles”The foundation for safe, consistent broadcast content in vehicles
These principles guide broadcasters in creating content that behaves predictably across different receivers. They ensure text, visuals and signalling are clear, stable, and effortless for drivers to understand. Following these principles helps your service appear reliable, familiar and distraction-free in every vehicle.
Readable at a Glance
Section titled “Readable at a Glance”Ensure every update can be understood instantly
Drivers only have a split second to glance at the screen. All broadcast content should therefore be short, legible and immediately recognisable.
This means:
- Concise text that updates no more than every 20 seconds
- Visuals that are simple, relevant and readable at small sizes
- Logos and images that work on both dark and light backgrounds
- No duplicate information already shown by the receiver
Everything you send should be clear at arm’s length, in all lighting conditions, without forcing the driver to scroll, decipher or wait.
Reduce Driver Interaction
Section titled “Reduce Driver Interaction”Support quick, low-effort use through stable, predictable behaviour
Your broadcast content should minimise how often a driver needs to touch or check the interface.
To achieve this:
- Ensure station names and logos are static, clear and formatted correctly
- Avoid unnecessary text updates or rapid changes that cause distraction
- Keep visuals lightweight, relevant and transmitted often enough to be received reliably
- Use correct announcement types and align signalling precisely with the audio
- Provide accurate programme times so end times display correctly
Reliable, steady broadcast data helps drivers stay focused on the road, reduces confusion, and supports a seamless, low-interaction radio experience.
