Testing for Dark Conditions

Vehicle interiors can become very dark at night or in tunnels, and bright visuals can create sudden glare that distracts or discomforts the driver. Because radio images appear unexpectedly and often occupy a prominent part of the screen, it’s important that they are tested for low-light conditions.

When preparing artwork for now-playing screens, programme or show visuals, or promotional and advertising images:

  • Avoid excessive brightness or pure white backgrounds. Images that look fine in daylight can appear harsh or dazzling at night, especially when switching from audio-only to a visual update.
  • Check contrast in both bright and dim environments. Ensure text, logos and key elements remain readable when the image is darkened or when the screen’s brightness is automatically reduced.
  • Test legibility when the display dims. Many vehicles automatically lower screen brightness at night. Your imagery should still be clear when displayed at reduced luminance, without losing essential detail.
  • Limit visual complexity. Busy or intricate designs become harder to interpret in low-light settings. Prioritise simple, high-clarity imagery that communicates the message at a glance.
  • Avoid sharp transitions. Fast switches from a dark UI to a bright visual can be startling. Choosing softer palettes and moderate brightness levels helps maintain visual comfort.

These checks ensure your images remain safe, readable and comfortable to view during night-time driving, and prevent unnecessary distraction when visuals appear on the dashboard.

  1. Test your images in a fully dark room or in a car cab. This replicates how visuals will appear inside a vehicle.
  2. Check readability at the correct distance (600–800mm) to ensure text, artists, programme titles or advert messaging can be understood at a quick glance.
  3. Observe the image during UI transitions, such as switching from audio-only to a visual. Brightness jumps or flashes should not feel harsh or startling.
