Manufacturers have a critical role in creating a good experience of broadcast radio for the driver.
Working within their Human-Machine Interface (HMI), they must ensure radio content is displayed clearly, consistently, and safely. The interface must support fast recognition, familiar interaction patterns, and compliance with accessibility and legibility standards.
Context for Implementation
Section titled “Context for Implementation”- Each vehicle manufacturer uses their own HMI, so the guidelines enable designers to use best practices that work with any house style without losing legibility or usability
- Broadcasters and manufacturers must both follow the guidelines to make sure the experience is consistent and works as expected
- The UX should be designed for ease of use and align with how drivers already understand radio in vehicles, using familiar actions and icons
- Clear guidance is provided on how to design, present, and update content to drivers on screens with dense information capabilities
How to use these guidelines
Section titled “How to use these guidelines”Choose your starting point based on your needs:
Design Guidelines covers the first principles of visual design elements for a radio HMI. We know you might have limited flexibility here if radio needs to fit within your existing design system.
The remaining sections cover how to display and handle radio-specific information and behaviours. These are important for everyone, regardless of your design approach.
